Cooking competition
Read a story about friends who enter a cooking contest and face a serious challenge. After that, you will have several questions to check your reading comprehension.
Last Saturday, Emma's college organized a cooking competition. The students had to work in pairs and prepare a dish in one hour. Emma and her friend Leo decided to take part together. Before the competition started, the teacher explained that each team had to choose a dish and prepare it without help from other people. She also said that the judges would look at the taste, appearance, and creativity of each dish. The winning team would receive a 150-euro gift card for a popular restaurant.
Emma suggested that they should make vegetable pizza. Leo said that he liked the idea, but he thought they needed something special to make their pizza different from the others. Emma agreed and suggested adding fresh herbs and colorful vegetables.
When the competition began, they started working quickly. Emma prepared the vegetables while Leo made the pizza dough. Emma told Leo that the dough looked too small and asked him if he could make it bigger. Leo explained that it would become larger when they cooked it. After about forty minutes, they put the pizza in the oven. While they were waiting, Emma noticed that another team was making chocolate cake. She told Leo that their cakes looked delicious. Leo said that he hoped their dish would taste just as good.
A few minutes later, their pizza was ready. They decorated it with fresh herbs and took it to the judges. One judge said that the pizza looked colorful and asked them why they had chosen those ingredients. Emma explained that they wanted to make a healthy and colorful dish. After tasting all the dishes, the judges announced the results. They said that another team had won first prize because their dish was the most creative. Emma and Leo came second.
Although they did not win the prize, both friends were happy with their result. Leo said that he had really enjoyed the competition, and Emma told him that working together had been the best part. They agreed that they wanted to take part again the following year.
